Pura Vida! This is not just a common phrase in Costa Rica, but a way of life. The term in English, literally translating to Pure Life or Simple Life, is true Costa Rican culture. This motto truly exemplifies how they live their everyday lives, wishing upon others a positive attitude and good vibes. It is almost impossible to not embrace the Pura Vida attitude once you step off the plane upon arrival. As the warm air envelopes you and the breeze flows through your hair as you make your way down the road to your destination, you can’t help but smile knowing you are in a small piece of paradise.
If you have never traveled to Costa Rica, deciding on that perfect location can be tough. Eastern Costa Rica has been less developed with tourism, so accommodations tend to be less extravagant, but it is rich in culture and nature. Central Costa Rica, such as La Fortuna, is in view of the amazing Arenal Volcano. Experience the sights and sounds of the rainforest, explore refreshing waterfalls, or soak in warm soothing hot springs. From there, you can travel to Monteverde Cloud Forest. A huge bio diverse national park that hundreds of species of animals and thousands of species of plants call home. If you feel the need to come down from the clouds and join civilization again, Western Costa Rica has it all. Built up for tourism due to its popularity with sportfishing, you can find a little bit of everything along the west coast. Eco-tourism, Boutique, Luxury – something for everyone. From Guanacaste down to Manuel Antonio there are so many options to enjoy.
For the fishing fanatics, Los Suenos is a hot spot for sportfishing. Here you can catch the most infamous Rooster Fish. But other common catches are Marlin, Tuna, and Sailfish. If trying to spot some different species of monkeys or hoping to catch a glimpse of a sloth, is more your speed, Manuel Antonio National Park is also close by. It’s a beautiful walk thru the park that ends down at the beach where you can cool off in the ocean and even set your beach towel down next to a family of monkeys that happen to be snacking on some fallen coconuts. And if all this isn’t enough activity, the options are endless; zip-lining, horseback riding, snorkeling…just to name a few.
I hope one day, you find yourself on a black sand beach in Costa Rica, taking a deep breath and looking at everything around you. Feeling the warmth of the sand, the coolness of the ocean, taking a long sip of an ice cold Imperial and saying to yourself, “Pura Vida.” Because that moment is what it is all about and we all should be that fortunate to embrace that.
